What GSM Actually Measures in Photo Paper

GSM stands for Grams per Square Meter. It is a metric unit that measures the mass of a single sheet of paper cut to exactly one square meter. While it is commonly used as a proxy for thickness, GSM technically measures weight and density rather than physical depth.

They remain perfectly flat and are robust enough to be displayed on their own or in frames without protective glass.

When choosing a weight, also consider how the paper finish interacts with the coating. Glossy, matte, luster, and satin finishes all have unique coating densities that affect the final visual impact. A heavy matte paper will feel different from a glossy paper of the exact same GSM, so it is wise to test small sample packs to observe how your specific printer inks interact with each surface.

Verifying Printer Compatibility and Feed Limits

Before purchasing heavyweight photo paper, you must verify that your printer can physically handle the thickness. Exceeding your printer’s maximum supported GSM can lead to severe paper jams, feed errors, or even permanent damage to the internal roller mechanisms.

Consult your printer manufacturer’s manual or official specifications sheet to find the maximum paper weight limit. Many consumer printers are rated up to a certain GSM for standard paper, but have a separate, higher limit specifically for dedicated photo papers.

The design of your printer’s paper path is a major factor in handling thick media. Rear-feed or top-feed trays are highly recommended for heavy photo papers because they offer a relatively straight paper path with minimal bending. Bottom-loading paper cassettes, which force the paper to make a sharp U-turn inside the machine, often struggle to feed stiff, high-GSM sheets.

Can I use standard copy paper GSM for printing photos?

No, standard copy paper is not suitable for high-quality photo printing, even if it has a decent weight. Standard office paper, typically between 70 and 80 GSM, lacks the specialized micro-porous or swellable coatings required to lock in liquid photo inks. Without these coatings, the ink will bleed through the fibers, colors will appear dull and muddy, and the paper will warp severely under the moisture of the ink.
